How to Use Merge Tags in Emails

How to Use Merge Tags in Emails

Merge tags let you add subscriber or site information inside your emails.

Campaign Builder / Sky Campaigns supports merge tags in welcome emails, auto responders, and newsletters.

What Merge Tags Do

Merge tags are placeholders.

When an email is sent, Campaign Builder replaces the merge tag with the correct value.

For example, if you use:

{{first_name}}

Campaign Builder can replace it with the subscriber’s first name when the email is sent.

Where You Can Use Merge Tags

You can use merge tags in:

  • Welcome emails.
  • Auto responder emails.
  • Newsletter emails.

Supported Merge Tags

Campaign Builder supports these merge tags:

Merge Tag What It Shows
{{first_name}} Subscriber first name
{{last_name}} Subscriber last name
{{email}} Subscriber email address
{{blog_name}} Website name
{{blog_url}} Website URL
{{date}} Current date

Example Welcome Email

You can write:

Hi {{first_name}}, welcome to {{blog_name}}.

When the email is sent, the subscriber may see:

Hi Sarah, welcome to My Website.

Example Newsletter Text

You can write:

Hello {{first_name}}, check out our latest updates at {{blog_url}}.

This helps make newsletter emails more personal.

Best Practices

Use merge tags carefully.

Before sending an email, check that:

  • The merge tag spelling is correct.
  • The merge tag uses double curly brackets.
  • The subscriber data exists.
  • The email still makes sense if a name is missing.

Important Note

If a merge tag does not have a matching value, the email may not look as expected.

Always review your email content before sending newsletters or activating auto responders.
